What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- In literature, students identify and analyze elements such as verse, rhythm, meter, dialogue, and stage directions. In informational text, they identify sequence, comparison, cause-and-effect, or problem-solution structure.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student names a structural element or pattern accurately and explains its role. The analysis connects organization to how readers understand events, ideas, or presentation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any line break as verse or any exchange as stage dialogue. They may identify informational structure from one signal word without checking the whole section.
How to Assess It
- Give one literary excerpt and one informational paragraph. Ask students to identify one structural element in each and explain how it organizes meaning.
