What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students cite strong, thorough evidence when analyzing explicit and implicit meaning in literary and informational texts. They make logical inferences and develop questions that lead to deeper understanding or further exploration.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects enough precise evidence to support the full analysis, not just one part. The student explains the reasoning, recognizes limits in the evidence, and asks a question that opens a productive line of inquiry.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect many quotations without evaluating their strength or explaining their connection. They may overstate an inference, or ask a broad question that cannot be investigated through the text or related research.
How to Assess It
- Give students a passage and an analytical claim. Ask for two strong citations, an inference with reasoning, and one focused question for deeper study.
