What Students Need to Do: Students cite textual evidence when analyzing explicit and implicit meaning in literary and informational texts. They make logical inferences and explain how the cited evidence supports each conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects accurate, relevant evidence rather than a nearby quotation. The student separates observation from inference and makes the reasoning between the evidence and analysis clear.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a quotation as self-explanatory or cite a detail that supports only part of the analysis. They may confuse a plausible outside idea with an inference grounded in the text.
How to Assess It: Give students a paragraph and an implicit-meaning question. Require an inference, a precise citation, and a brief explanation of the evidence-to-inference connection.

Lesson moves

Build evidence ladders with analysis, quotation, and reasoning cards, then repair ladders with missing or weak steps.
Ask, ‘Which line best supports this interpretation, and why is it stronger than the other possible evidence?’
Play Evidence Face-Off by comparing two citations and defending which more directly supports an assigned analysis.
Analyze a public statement to infer its unstated audience, citing wording that supports the conclusion.
