What Students Need to Do: Students locate and refer to relevant evidence when explaining explicit and implicit meaning in literary and informational texts. They make logical inferences and show how the evidence supports them.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects the most relevant detail rather than every related sentence. The student distinguishes what the text states from what it implies and explains the reasoning between evidence and inference.
Common Misconceptions: Students may quote a large section without identifying the useful detail. They may treat a personal belief as an inference or choose evidence that shares a topic but does not support the explanation.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage and an inference prompt. Require a concise answer, one relevant detail, and a sentence explaining how the detail supports the inference.

Lesson moves

Use evidence ranking cards to order four passage details from strongest to weakest support for one inference.
Ask, ‘What does the author leave unstated, and which detail most strongly supports your interpretation?’
Play Evidence Auction, giving teams limited tokens to bid on the details that best support an assigned inference.
Read a public notice and infer who needs to act, citing the detail that supports the decision.
