What Students Need to Do: Students locate and refer to relevant evidence when explaining what literary and informational texts say directly and indirectly. They use that evidence to make logical inferences.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student distinguishes a stated fact from an inference and selects evidence that supports each explanation. The student refers to the relevant words or details and explains the reasoning that connects them.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a true detail that does not support the explanation. They may present background knowledge as textual evidence or make an inference that goes beyond what the text allows.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage with one direct question and one inference question. Require an answer, relevant evidence, and a brief explanation for each.

Lesson moves

Place claim and evidence cards beside a passage; students match supported pairs and replace weak evidence.
Ask, ‘What does the text imply here, and which words make that inference logical?’
Play Direct or Inferred by sorting statements, then locating evidence for every inference card.
Analyze a product label to explain one stated fact and infer how a customer should use the product.
