What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students cite specific evidence when analyzing what literary and informational texts state and imply. They use that evidence to make logical inferences and explain their reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses evidence that directly supports the analysis and cites it accurately. The student distinguishes the text's words from the inference and explains how the evidence leads to that conclusion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may insert a quotation without explaining its relevance or cite a detail that only shares the topic. They may present prior knowledge as text evidence or make an inference the passage cannot support.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and an inference prompt. Require a claim, one accurate citation, and two sentences explaining how the evidence supports the reasoning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use claim, citation, and reasoning cards to build evidence chains, then replace any weak or unrelated link.

  2. Ask, ‘What does this passage imply, and which exact words make your inference logical?’

  3. Play Citation Check by matching analyses to the strongest supporting excerpts and explaining each choice.

  4. Analyze a consumer review to infer the reviewer's priorities, citing the phrases that support the inference.
