What Students Need to Do: Students cite strong evidence when analyzing explicit and implicit meaning in literary and informational texts. They make logical inferences and choose evidence substantial enough to support the full analysis.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects the strongest evidence from several relevant possibilities and cites it accurately. The student explains how the evidence supports each part of an analysis and acknowledges when support is limited.
Common Misconceptions: Students may mistake a long quotation for strong evidence or select details that support only the easiest part of a claim. They may overstate an inference when the text offers mixed or limited support.
How to Assess It: Give students an analytical claim and four possible excerpts. Ask them to choose the strongest evidence and explain why it supports the claim better than another excerpt.
