What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather relevant information from multiple sources and judge whether each source is credible. They quote or paraphrase accurately, avoid plagiarism, and record basic bibliographic information.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains why a source is trustworthy enough for the task and selects information that answers the question. Quotations, paraphrases, and source details are clearly documented.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mistake relevance for credibility, copy source wording without quotation marks, or change meaning while paraphrasing. They may attach citations without integrating evidence into their own reasoning.

How to Assess It

Provide two sources of different credibility. Ask students to choose one, justify the choice, paraphrase a relevant idea, and record its basic bibliographic information.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort source cards by relevance and trustworthiness, then annotate the strongest card with evidence for both judgments.

  2. Ask students when paraphrasing becomes plagiarism and have them revise a flawed example.

  3. Play citation repair with teams correcting source entries and matching each entry to an integrated quotation.

  4. Research a community claim online and prepare a cited fact check for a school audience.
