What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level literary and informational texts aloud with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression. They strengthen those qualities through successive readings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student changes phrasing and tone to fit genre, punctuation, and meaning. Repeated readings show smoother delivery and fewer errors without sacrificing comprehension.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read too quickly to show phrasing or meaning. They may use one dramatic style for every genre or repeat without reflecting on improvement.
How to Assess It
- Have students record first and final readings of a grade-level passage. Ask them to identify evidence of improved accuracy, rate, and expression.
