What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level text aloud accurately, at a suitable rate, and with expression. Successive readings become smoother and clearer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student’s later reading shows fewer errors, better phrasing, and expression suited to meaning. Rate remains comfortable enough for comprehension.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rush to improve speed while losing accuracy. They may exaggerate expression without following punctuation or meaning.
How to Assess It
- Record a first and final reading of the same passage. Ask students to identify one improvement in accuracy, rate, or expression.
