What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read grade-level text aloud accurately, at a suitable rate, and with expression. Successive readings become smoother and clearer.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student’s later reading shows fewer errors, better phrasing, and expression suited to meaning. Rate remains comfortable enough for comprehension.

Common Misconceptions

Students may rush to improve speed while losing accuracy. They may exaggerate expression without following punctuation or meaning.

How to Assess It

Record a first and final reading of the same passage. Ask students to identify one improvement in accuracy, rate, or expression.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Echo-read a passage, mark phrases, and rehearse before a final recording.

  2. Ask students where the voice should change and why.

  3. Play Reader Rehearsal with partner feedback between readings.

  4. Practice a poem or short report for another class.
