What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level texts from different genres aloud with accuracy, suitable rate, and expression. They improve performance through repeated reading.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student adapts phrasing and expression to story, poem, drama, or informational text. Successive readings become more accurate and smooth without becoming rushed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat expression as exaggerated performance. They may speed up on repeated readings while missing words or punctuation.
How to Assess It
- Choose one literary and one informational paragraph. Have students reread each and explain one change in rate, phrasing, or expression that fits the genre.
