What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level text accurately, at an appropriate rate, and with expression that supports understanding. They monitor meaning, self-correct, and improve through rereading.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads smoothly with phrasing tied to punctuation and meaning. Errors are noticed and repaired, and the student can explain what was read.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may equate fluency with speed. They may read word by word, ignore punctuation, or continue after an error changes meaning.
How to Assess It
- Have students read a grade-level passage twice and answer a comprehension question. Note accuracy, rate, expression, and self-corrections.
