What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students orally read grade-level literary and informational texts accurately, at an appropriate rate, and with expression. They improve those qualities through successive readings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student’s second or later reading shows smoother phrasing, fewer errors, and expression matched to meaning. Rate supports comprehension rather than rushing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may race to reduce time while losing accuracy and expression. They may add dramatic voices that do not fit punctuation or meaning.
How to Assess It
- Record two readings of the same grade-level passage. Ask students to identify and demonstrate one improvement in accuracy, rate, or expression.
