What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students analyze how visual and multimedia elements add to the meaning of literary and informational texts. They consider image, sound, movement, layout, and timing.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student identifies a specific visual or multimedia choice and explains its contribution. The analysis connects that choice to mood, theme, information, emphasis, or interpretation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may describe what they see or hear without analyzing its effect. They may assume multimedia always improves a text without considering distraction or distortion.

How to Assess It

Show a text excerpt with one visual or brief multimedia element. Ask students to explain how a specific feature changes or adds to meaning.

  2. Ask students which media choice most changes the audience’s understanding and why.

  3. Play Media Effect Match with techniques and possible contributions.

  4. Analyze how a public-information video combines narration, images, and text to communicate.
