What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze how visual and multimedia elements add to the meaning of literary and informational texts. They consider image, sound, movement, layout, and timing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies a specific visual or multimedia choice and explains its contribution. The analysis connects that choice to mood, theme, information, emphasis, or interpretation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe what they see or hear without analyzing its effect. They may assume multimedia always improves a text without considering distraction or distortion.
How to Assess It
- Show a text excerpt with one visual or brief multimedia element. Ask students to explain how a specific feature changes or adds to meaning.
