What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They choose words that signal precise actions, emotions, states, and concepts within a topic.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student uses a newly learned word correctly in discussion and writing. The chosen term is more precise than a general substitute and fits the subject.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a sophisticated word without understanding its connotation or grammar. They may rely on vague verbs and ignore established terms within a subject.

How to Assess It

Give students four recent academic or content words. Ask them to explain a topic in three sentences using at least two words accurately.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Create vocabulary cards with definitions, examples, nonexamples, and small sketches from current content lessons.

  2. Ask students which verb most precisely shows a character’s way of speaking.

  3. Play Precision Swap by replacing vague words in sentences with accurate academic or subject terms.

  4. Write a short wildlife notice using conservation, habitat, endangered, and one precise action verb.
