Acquire and accurately use general academic and content-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being (e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife, conservation, and endangered when discussing animal preservation).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They choose words that signal precise actions, emotions, states, and concepts within a topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses a newly learned word correctly in discussion and writing. The chosen term is more precise than a general substitute and fits the subject.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a sophisticated word without understanding its connotation or grammar. They may rely on vague verbs and ignore established terms within a subject.
How to Assess It
- Give students four recent academic or content words. Ask them to explain a topic in three sentences using at least two words accurately.
