What Students Need to Do

Students write real or imagined narratives with an established situation, narrator or characters, effective techniques, descriptive details, clear sequence, transitions, and closure. The story develops an experience.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student orients readers, sequences events, uses dialogue or description purposefully, and links moments with time words. The ending follows from events.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list actions without developing characters or setting. They may add dialogue randomly or jump in time without signals.

How to Assess It

Give a narrative prompt. Ask students to draft a short story with situation, character, ordered events, dialogue or description, transitions, and closure.
