- Students establish a narrative situation and introduce a narrator, characters, or both. The opening orients readers before events unfold.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student makes clear who is present, where or when events occur, and who tells the story. The setup invites the next event.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with unexplained action. They may introduce names without roles or switch narrators accidentally.
How to Assess It
- Give a story situation. Ask students to write an opening that establishes setting, narrator, and at least one character.
