What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students open a narrative by establishing the situation and introducing a narrator, characters, or both. The opening gives readers enough context to enter the experience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student quickly makes the setting or problem clear and introduces relevant participants. The opening creates a useful starting point without explaining every later event.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with dialogue before readers know who is speaking or include lengthy background unrelated to the central situation. They may confuse narrator with author.
How to Assess It
- Give the situation, a package appears outside the classroom. Ask students to write an opening that introduces the setting, narrator, and one character.
