What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students engage readers by introducing a narrator, characters, or both. They give readers enough information to begin following the people in the narrative.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student clearly introduces a narrator, characters, or both and gives each a recognizable role. The opening invites readers into the narrative.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with unexplained action or list character names without roles. They may leave readers unsure who narrates or participates.
