What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students engage readers by establishing a point of view and introducing a narrator, characters, or both. The opening gives readers enough information to follow the people and viewpoint.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student establishes context and a consistent viewpoint while introducing people readers need to follow. The opening creates a clear reason to continue.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with unexplained action or list character names without roles. They may shift viewpoint accidentally or overload the opening with background.
How to Assess It
- Give a simple narrative event. Ask students to write an engaging opening that establishes point of view and introduces a narrator, characters, or both.
