What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop a narrative by describing what characters do, think, and feel. These details show how characters respond to a situation and help events matter to the reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses actions, thoughts, and feelings that fit the event and character. The details reveal a response instead of simply naming an emotion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a feeling without showing what caused it or how the character acts. They may add thoughts that do not affect the event.
How to Assess It
- Give the event, Maya hears a crash downstairs. Ask students to write three sentences showing her action, thought, and feeling as she responds.
