What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop narrative events. These techniques reveal how characters respond to situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student balances dialogue with purposeful description so readers understand both the event and character response. Each detail advances the scene or deepens the character.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write long conversations with no action or use dialogue that repeats information readers already know. They may name feelings without showing a response.

How to Assess It

Give the situation, two friends discover a broken window. Ask students to write six lines combining dialogue and description to show different responses.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange dialogue and action strips into a scene, then add one thought or feeling that deepens it.

  2. Ask students how an action can contradict a character's spoken words and require an example.

  3. Play dialogue balance by revising speech-only scenes with purposeful action and description.

  4. Write a scene about classmates solving a familiar school problem through words and actions.
