What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use time-order words and phrases to guide readers through narrative events. The transitions make the sequence clear without turning the story into a list.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects transitions such as later, meanwhile, or after lunch to clarify when events occur. The event order remains easy to follow from beginning to end.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat then before every event or use a transition that conflicts with the sequence. They may place events in order without showing time relationships.
How to Assess It
- Give four ordered events from a class trip. Ask students to connect them in a paragraph using at least three different temporal words or phrases.
