What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn and accurately use conversational, academic, and subject-specific words. They also use words that clarify where and when events or ideas occur.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses new vocabulary correctly in speaking or writing and adjusts the word to the context. Spatial and temporal phrases make relationships clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert an academic word because it sounds formal without matching its meaning. They may use then, there, or after without a clear reference.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recent vocabulary words, including one time or place signal. Ask them to write a short explanation using all three accurately.
