What Students Need to Do: Students describe how a text is organized from beginning to end. They explain how the opening introduces the text and how the ending brings it to a close.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student identifies what the beginning establishes and what the ending resolves or sums up. The explanation connects both parts to the text as a whole.
Common Misconceptions: Students may retell only what happens first and last without describing their functions. They may treat the final printed sentence as a conclusion regardless of meaning.
How to Assess It: Give a short text with clear opening and closing sections. Ask students to explain what the beginning introduces and how the ending concludes the text.

Lesson moves

Place beginning, middle, and ending cards from a text in order and label each part’s job.
Ask students what readers would not understand if the opening were removed.
Play Opening or Closing with sentences taken from familiar texts.
