What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use new words and phrases learned through talk, reading, listening, and text responses. They use adjectives and adverbs to make descriptions more precise.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses a recently learned word correctly in speech or writing. Describing words fit the noun or action and make the meaning clearer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a new word without understanding its meaning. They may place an adjective or adverb where it does not logically describe the intended word.
How to Assess It
- Give students a recently taught adjective and adverb with a simple picture. Ask them to say or write two sentences using both words accurately to describe.
