What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words and phrases learned through conversation, reading, read-alouds, and responses to texts. They use common conjunctions such as because to show simple relationships among ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately uses a recently learned word in a new conversation or response. The student joins ideas with a conjunction that clearly shows reason, addition, choice, or another simple relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a new word without understanding its meaning or use because without supplying a reason. They may join unrelated ideas simply by adding a conjunction.
How to Assess It
- Give students one recently taught word and the conjunction because. Ask them to respond to a familiar text using both accurately.
