What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use words and phrases learned through conversations, shared reading, read-alouds, and responses. They carry new vocabulary into play, discussion, drawing, dictation, and emergent writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses a recently learned word accurately in a new but related situation. The student can show or explain the meaning rather than only repeat the word from the original source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may echo a new word without understanding it or use it only in one memorized sentence. They may avoid useful new vocabulary and rely on general words such as thing or nice.

How to Assess It

Choose two recently taught words from a read-aloud or conversation. Ask the student to use each accurately in play, speech, drawing, or dictated sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Add new words from a read-aloud to prop and picture cards, then use them during related dramatic play.

  2. Ask, ‘Which new word helps you explain your response, and how could you show its meaning?’

  3. Play Vocabulary Pass by using a learned word accurately before passing its card to a classmate.

  4. Use new words while completing a classroom job, then draw or dictate what the words helped describe.
