What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether an event already happened, is happening now, or has not happened yet. They use the matching time word when discussing their lives and class history topics.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately labels familiar events and explains each choice in a sentence. The student can also place three events in time order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think anything from earlier today is still happening now. They may also treat the future as make-believe or think the past means only long ago.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of a baby, a child in class, and an adult. Ask them to label each picture and explain when it happens.

Ways to Teach It
Students sort picture cards showing babyhood, school today, and adult life into three labeled hoops, then explain one choice.
Ask students to complete three stems: In the past I..., in the present I..., and in the future I....
Play Time Word Corners: read an event aloud, and students move to the past, present, or future corner.
Use the class calendar to label yesterday’s trip, today’s lesson, and next week’s assembly with the correct time words.
