What Students Need to Do

Students put events in order and describe when they happened. They use words such as before, after, first, next, last, past, present, and future when discussing people and events.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students sequence three or more events from a story, class routine, or historical account. They choose accurate time words and explain how the order makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse before with after, or yesterday with tomorrow. They may think long ago means a specific date or that every historical event happened in the same period.

How to Assess It

Give students three picture cards from a familiar historical story. Ask them to order the cards and describe them using first, next, last, before, and after.

   Give pairs three picture cards showing a historical figure's actions, then have them arrange and retell the events in order.

   Show two images of life long ago and today, then ask, "What happened before, and what happens now?"

   Play Chronology Corners by labeling room corners first, next, then, and last, and having students move as you read events.

   Students create a morning timeline with drawings, then compare it with a school day from long ago.
