What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use transition words and phrases to connect facts, events, and explanations in social studies writing. They choose transitions that show time, cause and effect, comparison, contrast, or examples.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a clear paragraph in which each idea connects logically to the next. The student uses varied transitions that accurately show how the ideas relate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely only on first, next, and last. They may choose a transition that signals the wrong relationship, such as using however for cause and effect. Some add transitions without organizing the ideas logically.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write four sentences explaining one cause and one effect of a studied event, using at least three accurate transitions.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs historical sentence strips and transition cards, then have them build and read a logical paragraph.
Ask students to explain how because, however, and for example change the relationship between the same two ideas.
Play Transition Match by having teams pair social studies sentence cards with transition cards and defend each match.
Have students revise a choppy museum exhibit label so visitors can follow the timeline and understand why events occurred.
