What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write social studies responses that fit the assigned task, purpose, and audience. They organize claims, facts, and explanations logically, using suitable words and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students open with a clear focus, group related ideas, use transitions, and end with a fitting conclusion. They can revise wording and organization for a specific audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer writing or formal language always makes a response better. They may list facts without explaining connections or use the same tone for every audience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write six sentences explaining how a local law is made for a fifth grader. Include an opening, ordered steps, transitions, and a closing.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a mixed-up historical explanation, then have them arrange and justify a clear order.
Ask students to rewrite a paragraph for a museum visitor, then explain which words and details they changed.
Run an audience-switch challenge where students adapt one response for a classmate, a principal, and a local historian.
Have students write a short public notice explaining a city council decision to community members.
