What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose transitions that show addition, contrast, cause, or an example. They connect claims, counterclaims, reasons, and evidence so readers can follow the argument.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can revise a choppy argument using precise connectors such as because, for example, however, and therefore. They can explain what relationship each connector shows.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add transitions randomly or repeat the same one throughout a paragraph. They may use also for a counterclaim or therefore when the evidence does not show a result.

How to Assess It

Give students four sentences: “The city should preserve the historic market. It teaches local history. Repairs cost too much. Grants can cover some costs.” Ask them to combine the sentences into one paragraph, underline each connector, and label its job.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups color-coded strips for a claim, reason, evidence, and counterclaim, then have them arrange and connect the strips into a paragraph.

  2. Ask students to write four sentences arguing whether museums should return historical objects, using one contrast connector and one evidence connector.

  3. Run a transition sort relay where teams place cards under addition, contrast, cause, example, or conclusion, then use each correctly.

  4. Have students mark connectors in a local newspaper editorial and explain how each one links the writer’s ideas.
