What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear claim about a social studies topic. They support it with accurate evidence from trustworthy sources and explain how each detail proves the claim.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects facts that directly support the claim, rather than facts that are merely related. The student names credible sources and connects evidence to the claim with clear reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the claim. They may choose evidence based on agreement rather than accuracy or relevance. Some treat every website as equally trustworthy.
How to Assess It
- Give students one historical claim and three source excerpts. Ask them to choose the strongest evidence and write two sentences explaining why it supports the claim.
