What Students Need to Do: Students read firsthand accounts and later historical explanations, then select details that support a claim or inference. They identify where each detail appears and explain how it supports their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can make a clear claim about a source and support it with an accurate quotation or paraphrase. The student includes a page or paragraph number and explains the connection.
Common Misconceptions: Students may summarize the whole source instead of choosing a precise detail. They may copy a quotation without explaining it, cite an unrelated detail, or confuse a primary source with a secondary source.
How to Assess It: Give students a short diary entry and one claim about the writer's viewpoint. Ask them to copy one supporting sentence, note its paragraph number, and explain the connection.

Lesson moves

Give pairs evidence cards from a speech and textbook account, then have them sort the cards under claims they support.
Ask students to write: Which source gives stronger evidence about the event, and what exact detail makes it stronger?
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claim cards with quotation cards, then earn a point for explaining each match.
Have students compare two local news reports about one event and identify which details support each reporter's main point.
