What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select relevant facts, details, or quotations from informational sources. They use that evidence to explain an idea, reflect on learning, or answer a research question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses evidence that directly fits the claim or question. The student names the source and explains how each detail supports the response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy long sections instead of selecting specific evidence. They may include unrelated facts, rely on opinions, or give evidence without explaining its connection.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short textbook passage about the Nile River. Ask: How did the Nile shape Egyptian settlement? Use two details and explain each.

Give pairs claim and evidence cards about ancient Egypt, then have them match each claim to two supporting details.
Ask students to write: Which factor most influenced this event? Support your answer with two details from the assigned source.
