What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use context clues, word parts, and reference tools to figure out unfamiliar terms in history and geography texts. They explain what each term means in that specific passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can define a term such as "monarchy" or "migration" using evidence from the surrounding sentences. The student can also explain why a general dictionary meaning may not fit the passage.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one familiar word or choose the first dictionary definition they find. They may also copy a sentence without explaining which clues reveal the term's meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph containing one bolded social studies term. Ask them to define it and underline two clues that support their answer.

Give pairs context clue cards and vocabulary cards to match, then have them highlight the words that support each match.
Ask students to explain in writing how the meaning of "revolution" changes in a history text and a science text.
