What Students Need to Do: Students find words, details, and missing information that show how a writer views a topic. They use those clues to explain what the writer wants readers to think or do.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify loaded words and selected facts, then cite them as evidence. The student can explain how those choices reveal viewpoint or purpose without relying on personal opinion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the author’s viewpoint with their own opinion or treat any strong statement as biased. They may claim a fact was omitted without checking another source or available context.
How to Assess It: Project: “After months of excuses, the council finally abandoned its wasteful park plan.” Ask: Which words reveal the author’s viewpoint, and what purpose do they suggest?

Lesson moves

Have pairs highlight charged words in a printed article, then replace each with a neutral word and compare the effect.
Ask students to write: Which sentence best shows the writer's viewpoint, and what specific word or missing fact supports your claim?
Play Evidence Sort: teams place sentence cards under fact, opinion, or loaded language, then defend one choice.
Compare two headlines about the same school event and discuss how word choice changes what readers expect before opening the article.
