What Students Need to Do: Students identify whether an author organizes details by time, similarities and differences, or causes and results. They point to signal words and details that show how the ideas connect.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a history passage, a student accurately names its main organization pattern. The student cites two clues from the passage and explains how the pattern helps present the topic.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any passage with dates sequential, even when the dates support a cause-and-effect explanation. They may confuse comparison with two unrelated lists. They may also assume that an earlier event caused a later one without textual evidence.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Is today’s passage organized mainly by sequence, comparison, or cause and effect? Cite two words or details that prove your answer.”

Lesson moves

Print event and evidence cards from a short passage; students arrange them, label the structure, and underline clues.
Ask, “How would the account change if the author organized it by comparison instead of cause and effect?”
Play Structure Sort: teams place paragraph cards under sequence, comparison, or cause and effect, earning a point only with cited evidence.
Students examine a museum timeline, phone comparison chart, and news report, then identify how each source organizes information.
