What Students Need to Do
- Students plan an informative social studies piece so the reader knows the topic, purpose, and path from the start. They group related facts into clear sections and add headings or visuals when those tools improve understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student opens with a focused topic and a useful preview, then groups related facts under logical sections. They choose headings, charts, maps, images, or links only when those features make the explanation easier to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often write a broad opening that gives no preview, or list facts in source order instead of grouping them by idea. They may use headings that do not match the section, or add decorative images and charts that provide no useful information.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students six facts about the Silk Road. Ask them to write a two-sentence opening, sort the facts under two headings, and name one useful visual.
