What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read an original historical source and a later explanation of the same subject. They identify where the accounts agree, differ, or add context. They explain how evidence from the original source shapes the later account.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match specific details or claims across both sources. The student can explain whether the later account supports, extends, or challenges the original account. The explanation cites evidence from each source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a firsthand account is always accurate or unbiased. They may treat the later source as a simple summary and ignore its interpretation. Some list similarities and differences without explaining why they matter.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence diary excerpt and a short textbook paragraph about the same event. Ask which diary idea the textbook supports, extends, or challenges, using one detail from each.

Give pairs color-coded evidence strips from a speech and textbook account, then sort them into agreement, added context, or conflict.
Ask students to write: Which source gives the fuller picture, and what specific detail from each supports your answer?
Play Source Match: teams pair claims from a letter with matching or conflicting textbook claims and explain each match for a point.
Compare a fictional eyewitness post about a school event with the next day's newsletter recap, then note what the recap changes or adds.
