What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students form a focused research question, then gather and compare evidence from several useful sources. As they research, they develop narrower follow-up questions that open new lines of inquiry.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses facts from multiple sources to answer the main question and identifies which source supports each claim. The student also writes focused follow-up questions based on gaps, conflicts, or patterns in the evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a topic instead of a research question, or rely on one source for the whole project. They may copy facts without connecting them to the question or write follow-up questions unrelated to their findings.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source excerpts. Ask them to write one research question, list one useful fact from each source, and add two related follow-up questions.
