What Students Need to Do
- Students write often about social studies content for different purposes and readers. They complete quick responses as well as longer pieces that include planning, reflection, feedback, and revision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose details, tone, and structure that fit the task and audience. They can draft quickly when needed and improve longer work through specific revisions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every assignment as a formal essay or use the same tone for every audience. They may also mistake correcting spelling for revision instead of improving ideas, evidence, and organization.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short source paragraph. In 10 minutes, have them write one summary for a classmate and another for museum visitors, then underline differences based on audience.
