What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main point of a historical source and select details that support it. They write a brief summary using only information found in the source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can state the source’s central idea in one clear sentence. The student includes key evidence, leaves out minor details, and avoids adding opinions or outside facts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the main idea. They may copy whole sentences, include every fact, or add information they already know about the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 150-word textbook passage about the Silk Road. Ask them to write the central idea and a two-sentence summary using only source information.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a short source to sort into central idea, supporting detail, or minor detail.
Ask students to write: Which detail best supports the author’s main point, and why?
Play Summary Swap, where partners remove copied wording, opinions, and minor details from each other’s summaries.
Compare a news article and eyewitness account of the same local event, then summarize each source separately.
