What Students Need to Do
- Students write an ending that sums up the main explanation without copying earlier sentences. They connect the ending to the evidence and ideas already presented.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can close a short history explanation with one focused paragraph or sentence. The ending names the main takeaway, fits the evidence, and adds no unrelated claims.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often repeat the introduction word for word or add a new fact in the final sentence. Some use vague phrases like “That is why history matters” instead of naming the actual takeaway.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph explaining two causes of the American Revolution. Ask them to write a two-sentence ending that names the main takeaway and uses no new evidence.

Give pairs sentence strips from a short article, then have them build an ending by selecting and arranging the strongest ideas.
Ask, “Which fact should readers remember, and why?” Students answer, then turn their response into the final two sentences.
Play Conclusion Match: students pair four explanation paragraphs with four possible endings and defend each match.
Have students write the closing lines for a museum label explaining how a local landmark connects to community history.
