What Students Need to Do
- Students end a social studies argument by returning to the claim and showing what the evidence proves. They summarize their reasoning without adding unrelated ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong writer restates the claim in fresh words, connects it to key evidence, and gives the reader clear closure. The ending matches the argument developed earlier.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy the opening claim word for word or add a new fact that was never explained. Some write a generic ending based on opinion rather than evidence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a claim and two facts about why ancient societies settled near rivers. Ask for a two-sentence conclusion that restates the claim and connects one fact.
