What Students Need to Do: Students name major U.S. holidays from calendar dates, pictures, songs, or symbols. They tell which person, group, or past event each day honors.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can match each holiday to the correct person or event. The student gives a simple explanation, such as Veterans Day honors people who served in the military.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every holiday is mainly about gifts, food, or a day off. They often confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day, or Presidents Day with Independence Day.
How to Assess It: Give students three holiday picture cards. Ask them to name each holiday and tell who or what is honored.

Lesson moves

Have students sort holiday names, pictures, and people or event cards onto labeled holiday mats.
Ask students to draw one holiday and complete the sentence, “We observe this day because...”
Play holiday clue bingo using clues about people, events, dates, songs, and familiar symbols.
Mark holidays on a class calendar, then compare them with school closings and community events listed on a local calendar.
