What Students Need to Do: Students recognize the tall, white, pointed monument in a photograph. They connect it with George Washington and Presidents' Day.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student selects the Washington Monument from pictures of several landmarks. The student names George Washington and explains that Presidents' Day honors presidents.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the monument with the White House or Lincoln Memorial. They may think George Washington lived inside it or that it honors Washington state.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of the Washington Monument, White House, and Lincoln Memorial. Ask students to circle Washington's monument and name the related holiday.

Lesson moves

Give pairs white blocks and a monument photo, then have them build its tall shape and add a pointed paper top.
Ask, "Why do people build monuments to remember leaders?" and record each child's answer beside a class picture.
