What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pick out the White House in photographs and drawings. They explain that the U.S. president lives and works there, connect the building with Presidents Day, and name the current president.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a mixed set of landmark pictures, a student selects the White House without a label and gives one accurate fact about it. The student also explains its Presidents Day connection and correctly names the current president.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the White House with the U.S. Capitol because both are large white buildings in Washington, D.C. Some think Presidents Day is the current president’s birthday or that all presidents live in the White House together.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of the White House, U.S. Capitol, and two other buildings. Ask students to point to the president’s home and workplace, name the current president, and identify the related February holiday.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs photo cards of four landmarks, then have them sort the White House cards and recreate its front with craft sticks.
Show a White House photo and ask, "Who uses this building, and why might we discuss it near Presidents Day?"
Play landmark bingo using pictures of the White House, Capitol, Statue of Liberty, and local buildings, and call clues instead of names.
Open the official White House website, view a recent photo, and find the current president’s name together.
