What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify customs and celebrations found in different families and communities. They describe examples such as special foods, music, clothing, stories, greetings, and gatherings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain one family or community tradition using clear details. They can name a similarity and a difference between two traditions without saying everyone celebrates the same way.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all families celebrate the same holidays or follow customs in the same way. They may also confuse a custom with a rule that every person in a group must follow.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket with pictures of two celebrations. Ask them to draw or write one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Create a class tradition quilt by having each student draw a family custom on a paper square and explain it.

  2. Ask students, “What is something your family does on a special day, and why does it matter to you?”

  3. Play tradition bingo with picture cards showing foods, music, stories, greetings, clothing, and gatherings from several communities.

  4. Invite a family or community member to share a celebration object, song, photo, or story with the class.
